The first four levels consist of the Premier Division, Football League Championship, Football League One and Football League Two.
Relegation from Football League Two is to the Conference National at Level 5.
Level 1 – Premier Division
- 20 teams
- 38 games (play each other once home and away)
- No promotion
- Three relegation places to Football League Championship
Level 2 – Football League Championship
- 24 teams
- 46 games (play each other once home and away)
- Two automatic promotion places to Premier Division
- Third-Sixth enter a play-off (two legged semi final, and one-legged final taking place at Wembley) and winner gets promoted to Premier Division
- Three relegations to Football League One
Level 3 – Football League One
- 24 teams
- 46 games (play each other once home and away)
- Two automatic promotion places to Football League Championship
- Third-Sixth enter a play-off (two legged semi final, and one-legged final taking place at Wembley) and winner gets promoted to Football League Championship
- Four relegations to Football League Two
Level 4 – Football League Two
- 24 teams
- 46 games (play each other once home and away)
- Three automatic promotion places to Football League One
- Fourth-Seventh enter a play-off (two legged semi final, and one-legged final taking place at Wembley) and winner gets promoted to Football League One
- Two relegations to Conference National
Cup Competitions
FA Cup
- All teams compete (See National Cups page for structure)
- Premier Division and Football League Championship teams enter in the Third Round
- Football League One and Football League Two teams enter at the First Round
- Final takes place at Wembley
- Match is replayed if the first tie is a draw
- If the replay is still level at 90 minutes, 30 minutes of extra time and if still level, a penalty shoot-out will decide the winner
League Cup
- Teams from all four levels enter
- Premier Division teams enter in the Second Round (or the Third Round if they participate in European competitions)
- Football League Championship, Football League One, Football League Two teams enter at the First Round.
- All games are one match, apart from the semi final which is two legs
- Final takes place at Wembley
- If the tie is level at 90 minutes, 30 minutes of extra time and if still level, a penalty shoot-out will decide the winner
Football League Trophy
- Teams from Football League One and Football League Two enter
- Split into North and South sections (24 teams in each section)
- Knock-out tournament until four teams left in each section, become the North and South finals, two legged match
- Winners of both North and South finals meet at Wembley for the trophy
- All games are one match each apart from the North and South finals which is two legs
- Penalty shoot-out to decide the winner if level at 90 minutes
Community Shield
- Winner of Premier League and FA Cup play in an one-off game at Wembley
- If the tie is level at 90 minutes, 30 minutes of extra time and if still level, a penalty shoot-out will decide the winner
